    Black-market Plastic Surgery | Episode 093

    Episode summary introduction:

The thing about beauty is that it’s a fad. Like Heidi Klum used to say, “One day you're in. The next day you're out..”

    Topic 1:

The reason why the statistics above are from 2019 is because we wanted a more accurate depiction of what the world of plastics was like before COVID. Remember, when the pandemic began ALL elective procedures were canceled.

    Topic 2:

As you can imagine there is not a lot of documented information on this subject. The ones performing the illegal, black-market cosmetic enhancements aren’t raising their hands to tell their stories. The one medical article we came across only had 28 cases.

    Topic 3:

Licensing for cosmetic surgery as MD, what you need to know.

    Outro: Buyer Beware

    • Only and always use board-certified plastic surgeons.

    • Do your homework

    • Talk to multiple providers

    • Review their experience

    • Talk about the realistic outcomes, risks and/or v. benefits of the planned procedure

    • Make sure that the procedure(s) are performed in accredited facilities and with the appropriate staff and safety equipment

    Patient Ratio v. Safety | Episode 092

    Updated: Jan 23

    Episode summary introduction:

There is an abundance of research that shows when the nurse to patient ratio is lower, outcomes are better. In the U.S. we do not have any federal laws that mandate safe patient to nurse ratios. California is the only state that currently has a law in place for minimum staffing ratios for all hospital units.

    Topic 1:

We know that when there are better staffing ratios, patient incidences and mortality decreases. This should seem like a fairly easy concept to bring everyone on-board. What seems to be holding hospitals back? Money -

    Topic 2:

Undoubtedly, if there was a federal law that mandated nurse to patient ratios, the nursing world would see this as a win.

    Topic 3:

Virginia State Board Guidelines and Recommendations

    Outro:

In my opinion, it will always boil down to your nursing judgment. It doesn’t matter if the doctor made the initial or deathly mistake. The blame will always be placed on that nurse as to whether they use their nursing judgment correctly. It’s also my opinion that about 99.9% of the time the nurse is held accountable for the mistakes of the facility or the provider. If you are not comfortable taking an assignment or feel as if it is out of your scope or knowledge base, say NO! Your patient and your license will depend on it.

Nurse Bill of Rights & Code of Ethics for Nurses | Episode 091

    Updated: Jan 27

    Episode summary introduction:

Many people, including nurses, don't realize that we have rights. There is an actual Nurse’s Bill of Rights. There are a total of 7 nurse’s rights. We were able to find these rights on the ANA website and we’ll discuss each one today along with the code of ethics..

    Topic 1:

The 7 Nurse’s Bill of Rights are discussed.

Topic 2: This seems like a good time to go over our code of ethics. I would encourage all nurses to read over this and really think about what they are being asked to do and what they are doing and if it aligns with your rights and ethics. Remember, if you are being sued, no one is going to ask what your facilities policies were at the time and no facility is going to back you in the courtroom.

    Outro:

Honestly, when we decided to discuss this as a topic, I don’t think that we realized what these Bill of Rights actually said. Which is kind of ironic because these are things we’ve been discussing consistently. But the real question is why aren’t these “rights” and “ethics” enforced and whose is the one to enforce them?
