Episode title: COVID Unvaxxed Transplant Denials/ Episode 099
Episode summary introduction:
Ashley and I did a few episodes on organ donation about a year ago. We know that the number one organ needed the most are kidneys. Those needing transplants on a waiting list that’s about a mile long. They are needed to the point where people are willing to receive them illegally on the black market. Imagine waiting years on the transplant list and finally being told, “You have a match” or “it’s time” to turn around and hear the words, you’re denied or you’re no longer a candidate to receive that kidney… And it’s not just kidneys we’re talking about. Heart transplants have also been denied because patients have refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccinations.
Topic 1:The Patient’s decision
Kidney transplant: (from the Washington Post), Chad Carswell, 38, Hickory, N.C.
Heart transplant: (from ABC news), D.J. Ferguson, 31-year-old father in Boston, Massachusetts
Topic 2: Hospital’s Decision
“Given the shortage of available organs, we do everything we can to ensure that a patient who receives a transplanted organ has the greatest chance of survival,” the hospital said. It also cited guidance from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and other organizations that recommend patients receive coronavirus vaccines before undergoing transplants.” Topic 3: Conversation
Political statement or personal preference?… As a human, I really wish that everyone on the organ transplant waiting list is able to find transplant replacements. Maybe with GMO organs this may be possible. But as a Nurse, I understand why the hospitals made the choices they did. Politics aside, the requirement of vaccinations for those receiving organs existed before COVID-19 and it’s vaccination and boosters. You must take a flu shot and follow certain criteria and this vaccination isn’t any different. I hope these patients will reconsider their positions.
