Suicide Awareness | Episode 027

Episode summary introduction:

This week’s topic of Suicide Awareness is not a light hearted conversation but it is a necessary and much needed conversation to have. Not just in September but all of the year.

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts please call 1-800-273-TALK. Your life matters! You may hear us say this phone number multiple times throughout this episode.

Topic 1:

A Suicide attempt is a non-fatal, self-directed, potentially harmful behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior. A suicide attempt might not result in injury. Suicidal ideation refers to thinking about, considering, or planning suicide. Causes are complex and determined by multiple factors, the goal of suicide prevention is to reduce factors that increase risk and increase factors that promote resilience. Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die.

Topic 2:

We discuss statistics, risk factors, s/s of suicide and where to find local and nationwide assistance. Topic 3:

988 is new, nationwide, 3-digit number for a suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline that would be directed to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifelines. The report found that a 3-digit suicide hotline number “would likely make it easier for Americans in crisis to access potentially life-saving resources.” FCC has only proposed requiring all telephone service providers to accommodate the 988 number within 18 months. In July 2020, the Federal Communications Commission's five leaders unanimously voted to finalize 988 as the three-digit number Americans can dial and be directed to the 24/7 national hotline.

By July 16, 2022, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will consist of a 3 digit, easily remembered phone number, 988. As Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Americans between 10-34 years old, the goal of 988 is to be accessible to all people needing emergency assistance during a suicidal and/or mental health crisis. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts please call 1-800-273-TALK. Your life matters!
